Recently there was a news that city’s famous 100 year old Irani restaturant – B. Merwan & Co., located near Grant Road railway station will down its shutters on 31st March 2014 as the dilapidated building in which it was housed will be going for redevelopment.
Even as the fragrance of freshly baked bread topped with maska permeates the air, most people are lamenting the loss of not just a culinary delight, but of a crucial slice in Mumbai’s heritage.
Even today, Merwan is just what it used to be hundred years ago. The same marble-top tables and Polish bent-wood chairs stand on the floral tiles that are typical of most Irani restaurants.
Here is a small tribute from photographer Anupam Maurya to this heritage cafe of Mumbai.
